frost flowers
On the morning after the first good freeze of the season, the frost flower phenomenon appears on weeds left by the side of pastures. Moisture inside the plants freezes and expands overnight, and by morning these fragile ice sculptures appear at the base of the plant’s stem. As soon as the sunlight hits them they melt.
Today was the day.
It was a long hot summer, and while this little cold snap we currently have will be short-lived, the frost flowers indicate that a change is coming.
